The Shropshire side left the Sportsjam Regional Football League – the old Mercian League – but their efforts to go back over the border were initially blocked by the Football Association of Wales.

The club rallied despite the original verdict and their first fixture of the season in the Montgomeryshire Football League Division Two is on Saturday at home to Newtown Wanderers.

On achieving the aim of playing in Wales again, club secretary Lee Davies said: "It's all sorted. I'm absolutely delighted, as is everyone at the club.

"To overturn the original decision and be able to compete in the Montgomeryshire Football League is amazing.

"The first game is on Saturday. I think we missed out on the league cup and another cup but we will be able to play all of our league fixtures."

Bishop's Castle have joined the likes of Oswestry-based The New Saints as a team based in England but competing in a Welsh league. The likes of Morda United, Trefonen and Newcastle-on-Clun also play Welsh football.

Bishop's Castle were in the Montgomeryshire Football League for 25 years before making the jump to the Mercian League six years ago.

With travelling to games becoming a problem, the decision was made to try to move back.
