Minsterley Motor Club kick-started its 2016 season by organising the first Formula Grasstrack event of the year.

The meeting saw all riders competing on standard 125cc Honda-powered machines, which meant wins came down purely to rider ability and track craft rather than engine size.

Spokesman Louis Bennett said: "Minsterley's first event at Minsterley Showground, Lea Cross, saw a good turnout of entrants and spectators.

"It was probably fitting club rider, former twice national 250 champion and currant senior champion, Graham Thomas, took the spoils on the day.

"He won the Tom Thomas Memorial final for the third consecutive year."

Thomas, from Shrewsbury, edged out fellow Salopian and former Telford ice speedway champion Wayne Broadhurst in the final to take the honours after tying on points after six legs.

West Midlands youngster Ryan Ashcroft took the last rostrum spot after losing out to the two Shrewsbury men in the final, after also tying on 41 points.

There was a good turnout of riders from the Shrewsbury area with a third of the senior line up coming from the town.

Young rider Charlotte Arthur took the win in the Auto Cadet category in one of three youth classes while her older brother, Aidan, won the cub category.

Minsterley's next event takes place at Lea Cross on August 27. For information about further formula grasstrack meetings throughout Shropshire visit www.formulagrasstrack.com.
