Saints eye first step of the treble

The New Saints look to lift their first silverware of the season tomorrow when the treble hunters tackle Bala Town in the final of the World Cup at Newtown.

The Saints have lifted the trophy five times, winning it three years in a row from 2009-2011, and will be out to make up for the disappointment of losing on penalties to Carmarthen Town in their last final appearance two years ago.

Standing in their way will be a Bala side who are lying third in the Welsh Premier table and are in the mix for European football this summer.

The Lakesiders also know what it's like to lose on penalties in the final after being edged out by Carmarthen 12 months ago.

But TNS, unbeaten in 26 outings in all competitions this season, will want to maintain their relentless run as they chase the first leg of an unprecedented treble – with the league crown and Welsh Cup also in their sights.

In reaching the final, the Saints have been at home for the previous three rounds, which saw them defeat Airbus UK 2-1 and Penybont 3-0 before needing extra time to sink Port Talbot 2-1.

Boss Craig Harrison has used the competition as a chance to rotate his strong squad and will back whatever side he puts out to lift the trophy on Newtown's 3G pitch.

Wales manager Chris Coleman will be attending the final for a third year in a row, and feels the game will be too close to call.

"The New Saints are the favourites, of course, and they are technically the best team in the competition, but Bala have every chance as the past two Word Cup finals have shown anything can happen," he said.

"I'm really looking forward to this one as both clubs are flying high in our national league. The Saints are still going for the treble of course, but Bala are a good side, technically and physically, and I'm sure their lads are really up for this one."

Coleman added: "TNS will also want to lay that ghost of losing on penalties last time, and the fact that this final is again at Newtown on a new 3G facility gives them the opportunity to do so."

Due to both teams playing in hooped shirts, the Saints will be wearing a retro style green jersey, the traditional colours of Llansantffraid who form part of the merged club.

The Saints' twice postponed Welsh Premier clash at home to Carmarthen Town has been rescheduled for next Wednesday.
