Shrewsbury boss Micky Mellon hailed his 'outstanding' defence as his Salop side reached the halfway point of the season top of the tree in League Two.

Yesterday's 0-0 draw against second-placed Wycombe saw Town remain in top spot after 23 hard-fought games.

"I have got to be happy because after 23 games we have the best record in the division" said the manager.

"On top is where we want to be and it's a great finish to the calendar year.

"If anyone had given me the option of being top of the table at the end of 2014 then I would have bitten their hand off.

"I'm delighted with that – you have to be pleased with that.

"We can be proud of the work we have done so far because nobody in the league has been able to better it.

"But we know there is an awful long way to go."

The draw against Gareth Ainsworth's Chairboys made it four straight clean sheets for Mellon's side and the boss is thrilled with how his defence is performing.

Deserve

"It's four straight clean sheets and they all deserve a huge pat on the back.

"A lot of time against Wycombe they were left three against three and they coped and handled the situation brilliantly.

"They are all very good players and you know what you re going to get from them.

"All of them are very consistent."

The boss reserved special praise for wing-back Mickey Demetriou.

"Demetriou has not been well and had a bit of man-flu which I don't like saying because my Mrs will hammer me for that," Mellon joked.

"But he has dug deep and played well.

"He is a really good player, a really good guy and is getting better all the time.

"He is growing into this new way of playing having come up from non-league, he is doing really well."
