Praise for century to put Shropshire on target

Shropshire skipper James Ralph has hailed Steve Leach's 'magnificent' century  which helped put Shropshire in a strong position on day one of their Unicorns County Championship match against Wiltshire yesterday.

Leach, who plays his club cricket for Shrewsbury, plundered 126 from 258 balls at Whitchurch Cricket Club to help his side to 332-9 from their first innings of the game, which is their last in the Western Division this season.

He was eventually dismissed by Ed Young in the 89th over, caught by Michael Coles. But Ralph said: "It was a magnificent innings from him. He held us all together and was close to batting all the way through. He did really well."

Leach was not the only batsman to earn praise though as Bridgnorth's Ryan Lockley made a fine half century with a knock of 53 from 86 balls.

The Cats' captain also shared the praise around the rest of the squad though after the team posted its highest score of the season yesterday.

Wiltshire finished the day on 61-2, with Gurman Randhawa claiming both wickets.

And Ralph said: "Wiltshire need to win the game to win the division and they are an attacking team so they will try to go past us."
