The 27-year-old, who competes for Scotland, won the over 78kg heavyweights title by edging out England's Jodie Myers, a British Judo Centre of Excellence fighter, on a Yuko.

Adlington's celebrations were almost cut short when she lost her gold medal in an x-ray machine at the athletes' village, but after being reunited with her prize possession she is now looking forward to qualifying for Rio 2016.

"The crowd were amazing and to come away with the win is fantastic," said Adlington, who now lives north of the border.

"It is the first time I have fought since February, so to come back here and win gold hopefully stands me in good stead for the Olympic qualifiers coming up later this year, which I can go into with confidence."

Adlington's success continued an impressive Games for Shropshire, especially in judo.

Shrewsbury's Danny Williams won gold on Friday and Telford's Kelly Edwards claimed silver on Thursday.

And there was golden glory in the pool as Chris Walker-Hebborn, who swims for Ellesmere Titans, won the 100m backstroke.
