Shrewsbury's Mellon: Give Andy Mangan his due

Micky Mellon today insisted he has landed a coup in Andy Mangan and the striker does not get the credit he deserves.

The Shrewsbury boss reckons Mangan will prove his worth at Greenhouse Meadow after linking up with him again.

He scored 22 goals in 54 games under Mellon at Fleetwood and formed a lethal partnership with Jamie Vardy – who got a £1m move to Leicester City and helped the Foxes to the Premier League last season.

Mellon believes Mangan's quality has gone under the radar and Town have bagged themselves a bargain.

He said: "I think so, if you look at his goalscoring record when he's been happy and been playing football, which is important to him, and when he gets a manager who understands him as a person and manages him in the right way you get a very good footballer.

"At Fleetwood lot of people looked at Vardy and kept speaking about him – and rightly so because he is a fantastic player – but Andy scored an awful lot of goals and got an awful lot of assists.

"He is a really good finisher and was maybe in the shadow of Vards but Vards would be the first to say what a good player Andy is."

He is expected to feature in today's friendly with Kilmarnock at Greenhous Meadow after training with the squad since Monday.

Mangan signed a one-year contract on Thursday after negotiating his release from Forest Green and has also played for Bury and Wrexham. But his spell at Fleetwood with Mellon remains his most successful time.

and the manager insisted he knows what to expect from the 27-year-old.

"He has got an opinion on how he feels the game should be played so I speak to him about it and try to marry that up with what I want to do," said Mellon.

"We have discussions about that and then we decide on a way we're going to go. I keep his standards high and make sure he doesn't drop below the standards he's set for me in the past."
