Ellesmere College girls heading to Lord's

Ellesmere College's girls team are heading to Lord's after winning the finals of the ECB's Lady Taverners Under-15 competition at Trent Bridge.

The girls will play at the home of English cricket on May 5 after seeing off five other schools to prevail from the regional round in Nottingham.

Six teams from across the Midlands took part, but it was Ellesmere who came out on top following some accomplished performances with bat and ball.

Also involved were Bishops of Hereford Bluecoat (Herefordshire), Christopher Whitehead (Worcestershire), Minster (Nottinghamshire), Tudor Grange (Warwickshire) and Wolverhampton Girls HS (Staffordshire)

In the league format, Ellesmere College came out on top in all of their five games, to finish on 15 points, to win the competition and clinch the Midlands title.

The college's cricket academy head coach Rod Jones said: "This is a huge achievement for the team, all of the girls played really well and it was a good team effort.

"We are hoping to take this level of performance on to the national finals and, hopefully, we will have the same success there.

"The team is certainly capable of winning more competitions."

The national girls-only competition provides a vital pathway for grassroots girls' cricket.

Over 1,000 schools have been involved in this year's under-13 and under-15 competitions.

The girls took their form from winning the county competition, held at Telford College of Arts and Technology recently, into the regional finals where they maintained their unbeaten run.

Overall the team has a 100 per cent win record from their 11 matches over the two tournaments going in to the finals next month.

Lottie Hulme, 14, said "We are all really excited about the final at Lord's, all the girls have played really well.

"We can't believe we have won both the Shropshire and Midlands competitions without losing a match."
