Shropshire golfers poised for a Salver showdown

More than 130 of Shropshire's top amateur golfers will begin their efforts to prize the Jeffrey Clee Salver away from defending champions Tom Benbow and Tom Young in Ludlow tomorrow.

Benbow, from Langley Park Golf Club, and Young, from Hawkstone Park, won the annual 36-hole scratch pairs foursomes competition last year.

The duo will be in the hunt to retain the trophy.

But 67 other pairs will be taking aim at the silverware when the action gets under way tomorrow morning.

Competition organiser Jim Edmiston said: "I am very happy with the turn out.

"It is part of the county order of merit and the first competition of the year, so we do get a good number of people taking part – to get off to a good start.

"But this year's attendance is fractionally higher than last year's, which is pleasing."

The contest has been running since 1962.

There will be six prizes up for grabs in the 36-hole scratch competition.

Three more honours will be awarded for top performers on the 36-hole nett leaderboard.

And there will be a further prize for the player with the best nett and gross scores – from the morning and the afternoon rounds.
