Shrewsbury School suffered mixed emotions on the national sporting stage.

The school’s first eight crew kept alive their hopes of glory at rowing’s Henley Regatta by defeating Canadian champions Ridley College yesterday.

Shrewsbury’s time of seven minutes and 24 seconds saw them win by two-and-a-quarter-lengths to sweep into the quarter-finals of the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup.

They were due to take on Radley College from Oxfordshire in the last eight today.

But Shrewsbury School’s hopes of retaining their National HMC Twenty20 cricket crown ended.

They were defeated by 19 runs by eventual Millfield in yesterday’s semi-final at Arundel. The Shropshire side were bowled out for 96 attempting to chase down Millfield’s 115-7.
