England players react on Twitter to Fabio Capello resignation
Thursday 9th February 2012, 9:30AM GMT.
England footballers and other sports stars reacted to the shock news of Fabio Capello’s resignation on their Twitter pages. Here are a selection of their tweets:
Gutted capello has quit. Good guy and top coach. Got to be english to replace him. Harry redknapp for me.
— Wayne Rooney (@WayneRooney) February 8, 2012
England star Wayne Rooney revealed that he felt gutted that Capello had quit and nails his colours firmly to the mast over his choice for the next England manager – Harry Redknapp.
Surely we will stick to an Englishman as our next manager. And that should run right through the squad from players to tea lady IMO.
— michael owen (@themichaelowen) February 8, 2012
Meanwhile, Michael Owen suggested that there should be an Englishman as manager, player and even tea lady. Which is a job title that might need looking at should Mickey find the right man for the job.
@rioferdy5 agreed !!!
— Boris Becker (@Becker_Boris) February 9, 2012
Rio Ferdinand joined the growing number of voices calling for an English manager this morning, hinting that things may have been lost in translation under Fabio Capello. And German tennis star Boris Becker, whose country have never appointed a foreign coach for their national team, agreed with the sentiments.
Gutted to see Fabio Capello go he put a lot of trust in me and gave me my first cap just want to say a big thanks really..
— Kyle Walker (@kyle28walker) February 8, 2012
Spurs defender Kyle Walker didn’t go as far as others and suggest his club boss for the national role, but did thank Fabio for having faith in him and giving him a first England cap.
Shocked about news on Fabio Capello…gutted to be honest, gave me my 1st cap and believed in me! Thank you Mr Capello! #GreatManager
— Jack Wilshere (@JackWilshere) February 8, 2012
Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere joined other young players in praising the former manager, thanking him for calling up him to the international stage for the first time.
No captain and no manager. 4 months from a major championship. What’s going on…….
— Joseph Barton (@Joey7Barton) February 8, 2012
Joey Barton, however, took the opportunity to look at the bigger picture and wondered where England will go from here with no manager, no captain and a major tournament just around the corner.
Quite a few of you saying my old man to be manager, don’t think so – he can’t manage his kids
— George Lineker (@GeorgeLineker) February 8, 2012
Apparently, quite a few people on Twitter were suggesting Gary Lineker for the next England manager (who? come on, reveal yourselves. . .) Fortunately, his son was well-placed to dismiss this talk, suggesting that he can’t even manage his kids.
Just seen that Capello has resigned. I think the common sense option is to go for Waddle and Hoddle. Their partnership is Genius.
— Graeme Swann (@Swannyg66) February 9, 2012
England cricketer Graeme Swann clamoured for an England return for former Wolves boss Glenn Hoddle – with his old mate Chris Waddle. Just keep them out of the recording studio.
