Welshpool Town reach for the Sky with Jeff Stelling backing

Struggling Welshpool Town have a new fan – in Sky TV football pundit Jeff Stelling.

The Lilywhites, languishing second from bottom in the Spar Mid Wales League, had little festive cheer, with a 10-1 hammering at Waterloo Rovers followed by a 7-1 beating at home to Llansantffraid Village

But their struggles have hit the national headlines in unexpected quarters after catching the eye of Sky’s Soccer Saturday anchorman Stelling and his fellow football pundits.

He learned of Welshpool’s 10-goal hammering at the hands of Rovers during Sky’s Boxing Day programme, making a joke that the Lilywhites had met their Waterloo.

Keen to put the record straight, Pool boss Dave Jones despatched an email to the programme’s producers, pointing out the problems the club has faced this season.

And, during the New Year’s eve programme, his letter was read out in full by Stelling who pledged to follow Welshpool’s fortunes throughout the rest of the season.

“When I was told after the Waterloo game that the score had been read out on Sky, at first I thought someone was winding me up,” said Jones.

“I don’t know where the score came from but someone must have passed the score to Jeff Stelling, and he made a bit of a joke about it.

“I saw a recording of it the following day, so I thought I would send an email to Sky, telling them of all the problems the club had this season – that we had no players and almost folded, and the money problems etc.

He added: “It was a stab in the dark. I didn’t think much more of it but Sky rang me back and said they would read my email out .

“I was at the ground after the Llansantffraid game on Saturday and I had about 15 texts from people sitting at home saying that my letter had been read out on Sky which took two and a half minutes on air.

“A bit of publicity can only be good, it has been a tough season, but something like this gives the club a lift. It has created a lot of interest.”
