Shropshire ace Sandy Lyle in golf’s hall of fame
Friday 16th December 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
Shropshire sporting legend Sandy Lyle has been inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
Lyle, who was born in Shrewsbury and played much of his junior golf at Hawkstone Park, has been invited to take his place alongside the greats after being recognised for a career which yielded 29 worldwide titles, including two Majors.
The 53-year-old won the 1985 Open and the US Masters three years later when he became the first British winner at Augusta.
Lyle was elected into the hall of fame via an international ballot.
“‘I’m not only delighted, but also very excited to be honoured by the World Golf Hall of Fame,” he said.
“I would like to thank all who voted for me – to be placed in the company of the greatest names in our game is very special.”
Lyle’s honour was announced at a European Tour lunch in London yesterday where Peter Alliss was also revealed as a new hall of fame member.
The pair will be officially inducted – along with Phil Mickelson – at a special ceremony in Florida next May.
European Tour chief executive George O’Grady added: “This is a special day.
“Peter Alliss and Sandy Lyle are both very worthy candidates for the World Golf Hall of Fame.”
