Shropshire judo hopefuls take step towards 2012 Olympics
Wednesday 14th December 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
Four Shropshire judo players have been named in a provisional British Olympic Squad – taking them one step closer to competing at London 2012.
Telford duo Kelly Edwards and Gemma Howell, Sarah Adlington from Bayston Hill and Shrewsbury’s Danny Williams are all named in a 27-strong list.
The quartet earned their places on the line-up by holding a top 100 position in the world rankings.
But the list will be assessed regularly by the British Judo Association’s Performance Directorate, along, with the national coaches, who have reserved the right to add and remove names as they see fit.
Howell – who yesterday paid a visit to the new Velodrome in the Olympic Park along with more than 30 other hopefuls as part of the Team 2012 Summit organised by Visa – will be hoping to get the final nod to compete in the under-52kgs section.
Edwards, a member of Wrekin Star Judo Club, is aiming to be there in the under-48kgs division while Adlington –who was today getting ready to head to China for the Qingdao Grand Prix on Friday – is an over-78kgs fighter.
In the men’s competition, Williams, who is now based in Camberley, is currently the only British judoka named for the under-73kgs division.
