Ted Hankey gives himself a fighting chance
Monday 14th November 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
Shropshire’s Ted Hankey has kept his Grand Slam of Darts hopes alive – with victory over one of the sport’s greatest ever players.
Telford-based Hankey defeated five-times world champion Raymond van Barneveld 5-2 at the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton last night to revive his hopes of squeezing through the round-robin stages by finishing in the top two in the four-man group B.
The 43-year-old, himself a twice world champion, was whitewashed 5-0 by Dean Winstanley in his opening game on Saturday evening.
But last night’s victory has set up a winner-progresses encounter against Stoke’s Ian White – who has also won one and lost one of his two games – tomorrow.
“There was a lot of pressure on last night’s game and I didn’t feel like Raymond was himself,” said Hankey.
“I’m very happy to be still in with a fighting chance of qualification and I know it’s down to me.”
A 121 victory helped Hankey win three legs on the trot after the first four had been shared.
Hankey’s win means van Barneveld is out of the competition as he had also lost his first group game.
