Leading jockey Ruby Walsh has been ruled out of the clash of Shropshire’s two up-and-coming National Hunt stars at Bangor-on-Dee on Wednesday.

Walsh failed in his attempt to overturn a five-day ban yesterday after falling victim of the new whip rules at Aintree last month.

That means he will be unable to ride Cheltenham Festival winner Al Ferof –who claimed the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle in March – for his owner, Cosford businessman John Hales, in the 2m 1f Beginners Chase at Bangor.

Al Ferof is due to go head-to-head with Champion Hurdle runner-up Peddlers Cross, owned by businessman Tim Leslie, who lives north of Telford.

“It’s disappointing Ruby won’t be able to ride Al Ferof and I discussed the situation with (trainer) Paul Nicholls last night,” admitted Hales, who hinted his charge could be withdrawn if the right replacement couldn’t be found.

“Paul is trying to get something sorted today.”

Peddlers Cross remains on course for Bangor, where both he and Al Ferof are due to have their first run over fences.

“He’s grand and in good form,” said Peddlers Cross trainer Donald McCain.

“Jason Maguire schooled him yesterday and was pleased with him. It’s looks like being a good race. It will be good for Bangor and a great spectacle.”
