Big night for Market Drayton FC’s loan stars

Market Drayton Town’s two young loan stars will spearhead a much-changed line-up in the Staffordshire Senior Cup – when they play host to League Two side Port Vale tonight.

Vale are expected to send a team made up of a mix of reserve and youth team players to Greenfields.

And Drayton assistant manager Darren Williams – standing in for boss Neil Woolliscroft, who is on a business trip in America – also plans to rest several senior players.

But teenager Harry Clayton, whose loan from Crewe Alexandra has just been extended for a third month, and Stoke City work experience player Sam Whitehurst will both be involved.

“With the injuries we have had we have been very short of players but all of a sudden we have got 24 or 25 to pick from,” said Williams.

“We’re going to rest six or seven of the players who would normally play and give some of the fringe players a run-out because league points are more important. But we will give Harry and Sam a run and it will be a competitive side.”

Williams is also planning to hand 45 minutes each to two goalkeepers Andrew Spooner and Damien Stevens.

And he is urging his side, free of the need to pick up Evo-Stik League division one south points, to enjoy the occasion.

“There is no pressure on us so I am looking forward to it,” added the No 2. “I’m confident we can do well.”
