There’s simply no stopping Telford & Wrekin in hockey’s Shropshire Star Cup.
The Midlands Premier side justified the formbook to romp to their sixth successive title at Lilleshall.
Telford defeated West Midlands Premier opposition Shrewsbury and Bridgnorth – 3-0 and 4-1 – in the round-robin event to make the perfect start to preparations for their League campaign, which starts on Saturday week.
“Due to games being postponed by other teams, they were our first pre-season matches and it was a good start,” said spokesman Jon Woodrow.
“We are using a different formation this season and, while there were lots of things for us to work on, there were some good signs.”
Telford & Wrekin began their campaign with a routine 3-0 triumph over Shrewsbury last Saturday thanks to a brace from Jon Heath and a Gary Royston strike.
Two goals from Harry Harbage and one each for Dan Wright and James Speake then helped Bridgnorth to a 4-1 victory over Shrewsbury to set up a winner-takes-all final clash against favourites Telford, who ran out ultimately comfortable winners.
Alex Johnson, Chris Jones, Dave Tracey and Royston were the Telford scorers in a 4-1 victory, Speake grabbing the consolation for Bridgnorth, who continue their preparations for the new campaign on Saturday when the host a triangular tournament involving Wolverhampton and Old Halesonians.
“From our point of view, it was a useful exerecise,” said Bridgnorth captain James Childs.
“We came under a lot of pressure in the first half of the Telford match but we improved in the second half.
“We played some good hockey and I didn’t think there was a lot between the sides.”
