November date to begin Shropshire Cricket League

A new era for Shropshire sport will be heralded in November, writes JAMES GARRISON.

That’s when the meeting will be held to formally launch the new Shropshire Cricket League.

The gathering – which will also see the Marston’s Shropshire Premier League and FBC Manby Bowdler Shropshire League League officially wound up as part of the merger – will take place on Monday, November 14 at the Lord Hill Hotel in Shrewsbury.

The new system will feature seven main divisions and three reserve divisions, with the possibility of Sunday league cricket returning.

“If clubs have a third or even fourth team, they will be given the option to play all their home games on a Sunday,” said Bob Williams, the Shropshire Cricket Board chairman who is also leading the talks on the merger.

“Some teams have enough players for a third team but don’t have a ground to play their home matches at on a Saturday.

“And teams that do have a third team but have to hire another venue are paying out a lot of money, probably more than £700.

“This will benefit everybody and the feedback we have had has been strong.”
