Shropshire darter Steve Farmer came within a whisker of notching one of the biggest victories of his career.

The Telford thrower was beaten 6-5 by five-times world champion Raymond van Barneveld in the quarter-final of the latest Players Championship event at Derby on Saturday.

Farmer had beaten Alex Roy, Andy Smith and in-form Wes Newtown to set up the meeting with the Dutchman and earned £1,000 for his efforts.

Farmer was beaten in the second round of yesterday’s Players Championship at the same venue while Shrewsbury’s Paul Rowley suffered two first round exits.
