Cricket: St Georges out of Birmingham League

St Georges’ seven year stay in the Birmingham League is at an end.

The Dragons were soundly beaten by seven wickets at Brewood yesterday to condemn them a return to the Shropshire League cricket.

St Georges were skittled for just 75 in their division three clash at Brewood, the hosts cruising home for the loss of just three wickets.

“It’s a massive disappointment to drop out of the Birmingham League,” said spokesman Fraser Watson.

“But it’s not a major surprise and it has been on the cards for most of the season.

“We have to re-group now and try and get ourselves back up first time.”

Oswestry remain in the thick of the promotion race after running out 48 run winners at Lichfield.

Warrick Fynn’s 56 provided the only serious contribution as Oswestry were dismissed for 175.

But that proved more than enough with paceman Jonathan Miles taking the first four wickets before spin twins Fynn and Mark Robinson took three each to dismiss their hosts for 127.

Shrewsbury’s end of season burst up the premier division table continued at Walsall – despite a batting collapse.

The visitors looked well placed to mount a big score when they reached 109-1 off 27 overs, Ryan Bishop making 45 and Ed Foster 37.

Apart from Rob Foster, who made 39, the remainder of the Shrewsbury batting line-up fell away as they were dismissed for 177.

But a fine bowling display ensured that total was more than enough as Walsall were skittled for 111.

Paceman Mike Barnard took 3-12 in a brilliant 14 over spell, while there were three wickets each for spinners Rob Foster and Alex Blofield.

Wellington turned in another stylish display to defeat Wolverhampton by 66 runs and remain third.

Captain Anthony O’Connor played a starring role as he took 6-18 to help reduce Wolverhampton to 30-8 at Orleton Park.

Martin Delaney also impressed with 3-27 as the visitors, who staged something of a recovery, were bowled out for 142.

Earlier Bilal Shafayat contributed 75 and Simon Khomari 57 as Wellington were bowled out for 208 .

Relegation-threatened Shifnal live to fight another day in division one as they snatched a winning draw at Walmley.

Tom Collins top scored with 72 in Shifnal’s 247-7, but the hosts looked set to secure victory as they required eight off the final over. Experienced paceman Adam Shimmons held his nerve, however, conceding just five to leave Walmley frustratingly short on 245-6.

Whitchurch are closing in on promotion from division two after hammering bottom club Eastnor by 102 runs at Heath Road.

Captain Maz Hasnain led the way for the hosts by smashing an unbeaten 169 in his team’s 274-7.

And left arm spinner Aqsad Ali then took centre stage, claiming figures of 7-32 as Eastnor were dismissed for 172.

Bridgnorth avoided defeat at leaders Ombersley but now find themselves just 18 points clear of the drop zone.

Despite four wickets each for captain Mark MacPherson-Lees and David Exall, Ombersley piled up 266-9.

Bridgnorth crumbled to 141-7 in reply, but experienced wicket-keeper Gareth Mumford dug deep for 77as the visitors ended on 218-8.
