Clubs out of tune as V Festival takes toll
Friday 19th August 2011, 4:11PM BST.
The big line-up for the V Festival this weekend might be star-studded – but its popularity means that the same can not be said for many Shropshire sports teams.
And there are plenty of sporting officials across the county hoping that their teams don’t hit a duff note as a result of losing key players who have chosen to head to the musical spectacular at Weston Park instead.
Take Ellesmere Rangers, who are heading off along the road to Wembley with an FA Cup clash against Shropshire neighbours Bridgnorth Town.
Rangers will make the trip to Bridgnorth without five first team regulars – who have all chosen tickets to see the likes of Enimem, Rihanna and the Manic Street Preachers over playing in the world’s most famous cup competition.
Then there’s Wem Town, who will be looking for a first league win of the season but who must do it with just two of their three-man management team – Chris Bullock festival-bound instead.
In the world of cricket, Newport chairman Bob Williams admits selection has been a “real headache” ahead of their match with Allscott tomorrow in the Marston’s Shropshire Premier League.

Absoulutley ridiculous that these players can just put their commitment on hold for the sake of a music fetsival. Its areal shame and one of the reasons Shropshire clubs aren’t as successful as they should be.

Bearing in mind that the V Festival has been a major UK music fixture that happens to have found its way to the border of Shropshire since 1999, surely local sports clubs ought to consider the date when setting matches…But then laying the “blame” at the sports clubs’ doors might just mean that a V Festival bashing headline is denied. Congratulations Shropshire Star – that’s two negative headlines against the Festival in one day!! Any chance of some positives for all those that attend and support the Festival and allow its economic and charitable benefits to be maintained – not to mention the headlining music?

If they want to listen to this awful music, can’t they buy a cd or “download” it to their computer?
