The New Saints are eager to mark their historic debut in the Shropshire Senior Cup final tomorrow by lifting the trophy.

Boss Mike Davies has already guided his Welsh Premier side to victory over a young Shrewsbury Town XI in the semi-finals.

But he expects a showdown with AFC Telford United at the New Bucks Head to be a much tougher assignment.

“We are delighted to be involved in the competition and want to give it our best shot at winning it,” he said.

“We will prepare as we always do, which is to win the game. We played them last year so we know a little about what they’re about (winning 2-0 in a friendly) but this is a competitive fixture so it will be completely different.

“It will give our players the chance to pit themselves against a strong Telford side and I think everyone here is looking forward to it.”

The Saints kick-off their league campaign at home to Bala Town a week tonight and Davies believes the meeting with the Bucks is perfectly timed to round off their preparations.

His side have already beaten Telford’s league rivals Luton Town 3-0 in a friendly.

“It’s a really good game for us,” he said.

“Telford are a strong side and Andy Sinton is a good manager so it will be a really tough test for us but it’s one we’re looking forward to.

“The Shrewsbury and Luton matches were a bit more inconvenient because we were still in Europe at the time but this one falls into our plans nicely.”

One player the Saints will be without is winger Richie Partridge who announced yesterday has been forced to quit football due to a persistent knee injury.
