Three Shropshire judokas to represent Great Britain
Friday 29th July 2011, 8:09PM BST.
Golden glory is the target for three Shropshire judokas who have been selected to represent Great Britain at the World Championships next month, writes CHRIS HUDSON.
Sarah Adlington, Gemma Howell and Danny Williams are part of a 15-strong party heading for Paris from August 23 to 27.
They will also stay on in France for the World Team Championships on Sunday, August 28.
They were given the nod following a meeting of British Judo’s Major Events Selection Panel – including head coach Patrick Roux and performance director Margaret Hicks – this week.
Adlington, who will turn 25 before the championships start, will compete in the over-78kgs section.
The Edinburgh-based fighter, who hails from Bayston Hill, will be vying for honours with four-time European champion Karina Bryant.
Howell, 21, is originally from Telford and makes the trip as the youngest member of the British squad.
She will compete in her usual under-57kgs section, having sampled life among the under-63kgs when finishing seventh at the German European Cup in Hamburg last week.
Williams, 22, from Shrewsbury, will compete in the under-73kgs and is seen as one of the most-improved players on the international stage – having cemented his place in the GB ranks this year.
“We have had some great performances of late and we are confident that we have players who can reach the finals to contend for medals,” said HIck.
