Fresh fears for future of Wrexham Football Club

Fresh fears were raised today for the future of Wrexham football club after the cancellation of last night’s friendly match against Colwyn Bay and tomorrow’s game at Vauxhall Motors.

Last night’s pre-season game was due to start at 7.30pm but messages appeared on both clubs’ websites yesterday afternoon telling fans it was off amid fears Wrexham would be unable to field a team.

Wrexham, managed by ex-Wales striker Dean Saunders, have been dealing with complex financial issues at the club in recent weeks.

A Wrexham AFC spokes-man said: “There was a bit of uncertainty about the players getting paid and Dean Saunders decided the best thing to do was to call off the game.

“We think it’s probably been completely cancelled rather than postponed. We were expecting a reasonable contingent but it wasn’t going to be a full Wrexham squad so it wouldn’t be as big as some games.”

Wrexham AFC has apologised to supporters and to Colwyn Bay Football Club in a statement on its website.

Vauxhall Motors FC website confirmed tomorrow’s pre-season game had been axed. The development is the latest twist in the ongoing saga at the Racecourse, after Crusaders rugby team, who share the ground with Wrexham, withdrew their application for next season’s Super League.

It would be tragic if the club went under. They were the first team I ever saw way back in 1964 as a nine year old. Arfon Griffiths, Sammy Macmillan etc. Great days, great players. It’s the oldest international ground still in use too.
