Silver lining for Shropshire judo hope Sarah Adlington
Tuesday 26th July 2011, 7:02PM BST.
Shropshire judo player Sarah Adlington enjoyed a silver lining at the German European Cup in Hamburg.
The 25-year-old, who hails from Bayston Hill but is now based in Edinburgh, was defeated by compatriot Karina Bryant in an all-British final to the over-78kgs section.
Bryant was following up her victory at the Miami World Cup three weeks ago, contributing one of four golds to the GB effort in Germany.
Adlington’s silver went towards a GB total of nine medals from the event, which was seen as a big marker ahead of next month’s World Championships in Paris.
Shropshire’s Gemma Howell took a trip into the unknown, stepping up to the under-63kgs section for the first time in what was an experimental move.
The 21-year-old, from Telford, was unable to get on the medal rostrum, claiming a seventh place finish.
Two more county judokas were in action – Telford’s Kelly Edwards in the under-48kgs category while Shrewsbury’s Danny Williams was representing GB in the men’s under-73kgs competition.
But neither of them were able to finish in the places after suffering early defeats.
