Shropshire cricketers in club-versus-county-dilemma
Tuesday 26th July 2011, 6:58PM BST.
A handful of Shropshire’s leading cricketers are facing a club-versus-county dilemma.
Shrewsbury have reached the quarter-finals of the National Knockout and are due to entertain Liverpool League outfit Ormskirk on Sunday, August 7.
Despite Shrewsbury’s best efforts, Ormskirk have refused to move the game which clashes with the first day of Shropshire’s Minor Counties Championship game with Devon.
It means captain Ed Foster, his brother Rob, Tom Cox and – potentially – Elliot Green and Stephen Leach must chose whether to represent Shrewsbury on the Sunday or Shropshire for three days at Exmouth.
But the immediate Shropshire focus was today on avoiding a first Championship defeat of the season to Cornwall at St Austell.
Resuming on 206-5, Shropshire were dismissed for 264 with former captain James Ralph making a career Championship best of 140 and Wellington’s Mark Downes an unbeaten 25. That left Cornwall needing 279 to win in a minimum of 79 overs, and they eased to 52-0 off 17 at lunch. See Page 39.
