Marathon trip won’t affect Shropshire’s cricketers
Saturday 23rd July 2011, 11:29AM BST.
Captain Ed Foster believes a marathon trip for Shropshire’s cricketers to Cornwall tonight will not affect their performance in the Minor Counties Championship clash tomorrow.
The squad of 12 will only begin their jaunt to St Austell when their Birmingham League club matches finish this evening.
It means many will not arrive until the early hours of the morning ahead of an 11am start tomorrow, but Foster insists his side will be ready for action when the first ball is bowled.
“It’s a long way but –whether it’s right or wrong – that’s what you have to do in Minor Counties cricket,” he said.
“Nobody does more travelling than Cornwall and we just have to get on with it.”
Shropshire’s hopes of a realistic challenge for the western division title all but passed when they were forced to settle for a draw against Oxfordshire at Whitchurch last time out.
But Foster insists every game is still vital for his side.
“We want to finish as high as we can and preferably in the top three or four,” said Foster.
Kent seamer Neil Saker has turned down the chance to play for the Unicorns against Lancashire in the CB40 tomorrow to play for Shropshire after taking nine wickets on debut at Whitchurch.
