The New Saints aim for biggest victory
Thursday 21st July 2011, 11:29AM BST.
The New Saints have enjoyed some famous European nights over the past two decades – but know they will need to surpass all previous exploits if they are to upset the odds in Denmark tonight.
The Welsh Premier runners-up are preparing to face FC Midtjylland this evening in the Europa League second round qualifier second leg with few giving them any hope after a 3-1 home defeat.
But they remained upbeat as they flew out, relishing the occasion in front of an anticipated 6,000 crowd at the MCH Arena tonight (6.15pm).
“Having to score three times against a very good side, nobody is giving us much chance, but we’ll remain positive and look to do the club proud,” admitted manager Mike Davies.
“We can take a lot of positives from winning at Cliftonville in the last round, our first away win in Europe, and whatever happens we want to enjoy the experience tonight and put in a good performance.
“With Midtjylland being 3-1 up, it will be interesting to see how they play it and whether they make changes or not.”
The Saints, themselves, are forced into one change with right back Simon Spender suspended.
The Oswestry men also face the task of having to quickly adapt.
Although they have already played five times this summer, it will be the first occasion they have actually stepped out on grass, and not their accustomed 3G surface.
Should they manage to overturn the deficit tonight, TNS will meet Portuguese outfit Vitoria Guimaraes in the third qualifying round games which will be played on July 28 and August 4.
