Graham Turner sets sights on Man Utd youngsters
Saturday 16th July 2011, 1:09PM BST.
Boss Graham Turner is relishing the chance to see his Shrewsbury Town class of 2011 pit their wits against Manchester United’s stars of the future tomorrow.
Town go head to head against a United XI at the Greenhous Meadow (3pm) in their first public pre-season outing.
With the majority of the senior United squad currently on tour of America, a youthful team is likely to head to Shropshire, but Turner is aware a stern examination awaits his side.
“Sunday’s game is a smashing one to look forward to,” he said.
“Manchester United invest a lot into their Academy so it’s going to be a big test for us and a chance for people to see United players who could progress to their first team in years to come.
“I hope there is a good turn-out.”
Turner is likely to give the bulk of his squad a run-out for some part of the game, although captain Ian Sharps and new striker Terry Gornell could miss out with minor niggles.
Interest in the game has been high with hospitality packages having sold out.
Commercial sales manager, Anton Gunter, said: “There has been a good response and we are now sold out in corporate hospitality.
“The good thing about pre-season games, it gives us the opportunity to promote the football club and its facilities to a new group of supporters and potential sponsors. Match day ticket sales are going well and we are anticipating a decent size crowd.”
Sharps, meanwhile, believes Town will begin this season with a stronger squad than the one which was beaten in the play-off semi-finals last term.
“The gaffer has kept the players he wanted to and has made some good new signings,” said the former Tranmere man.
“We have got a bit more pace up front and there is more competition for places at the back.
“The fitness levels are reasonably good so it’s all going well at the moment.”
