Cricket: Wellington back at top half of Birmingham League table
Monday 11th July 2011, 8:20PM BST.
Wellington have secured back-to-back Birmingham League premier division victories to climb into the top half of the table.
They romped to a six wicket victory over Moseley at Orleton Park to move into sixth place. The hosts took advantage of winning a crucial toss to dismiss Moseley for 124.
Early wickets for Anthony O’Connor – who ended with 3-36 – and Mark Downes put Moseley on the back foot while Wendell Wagner took 3-24 later in the innings.
James Cameron top scored in the chase with 32 while Downes was unbeaten on 27 as Wellington cruised past the line inside 30 overs.
“It was a good performance and to have won five games by the halfway point of the season is pleasing,” said spokesman Terry O’Connor.
Shrewsbury are now one place below Wellington after going down by four wickets at home to Barnt Green.
The London Road men struggled with the bat as they were bowled out for 143, the only meaningful contributions coming from 35 from Paul Donaldson and Joe Leach’s 33.
Declaring
Rob Foster took 3-35 to give Shrewsbury hope but Barnt Green eventually passed their target in the 51st over.
“It was very similar to the Knowle & Dorridge game two weeks ago where if we had scored even just 30 more runs, it would have been very interesting,” said captain Ed Foster.
“When we don’t bat well we are bowling well or vice versa.”
Shifnal allowed strong positions to slip twice as they were forced to settle for a losing draw at home to Bromsgrove to stay bottom of division one.
Bromsgrove were 100-5 at one stage but recovered to 284-7 before declaring in the 54th over thanks to an unbeaten century from Unicorns ace Tom Friend.
Tom Collins with 84 and Chris Brabazon with 66 gave Shifnal hope of an unlikely victory. But, after Brabazon had been run out, Shifnal fell away and they were clinging on for a losing draw at 224-8.
