Cricket: Wellington v Walsall
Monday 4th July 2011, 7:39PM BST.
Wellington continue to be the Birmingham League premier division’s happy travellers.
They ran out 27 run victors at Walsall on Saturday to earn a maximum 24 points. And it means three of their four victories this season have now come on the road.
Simon Khomari led the way with the bat as he made 56 in Wellington’s 191-9.
Bilal Shafayat also made 25 while Matt Tilt and Scott De Waymarn provided vital late runs down the order, making 25 and an unbeaten 27 respectively.
Wellington got off to a fine start with the new ball as they reduced Walsall to 73-7. Captain Anthony O’Connor, in his first bowl since May after a knee operation, took 3-29 while Mark Downes chipped in with 2-33.
Some resilient late order batting threatened to ruin Wellington’s day as Walsall crept up to 164, but they were bowled out with four overs to spare as Shafayat finished with 4-23.
“It was a fine win,” said spokesman Terry O’Connor.
“If I’m honest, I thought we were a bit light with 191 on the board but we bowled very well at the start.
“It got a bit nervy near the end but we got over the line which was very pleasing.”
Wickets
Shrewsbury’s hopes of retaining the title received a blow as a losing draw at Leamington Spa left them 41 points behind leaders Barnt Green.
Leamington racked up a massive 300-9 off 55 overs and no Shrewsbury batsmen could make it past 50 in reply as they ended on 224-9, Paul Donaldson making 43 and Ryan Bishop one less.
“We bowled well for 40 per cent of their innings but 300 was getable on what was a very good wicket,” said captain Ed Foster.
“But we lost too many wickets at the start of our innings and that cost us.”
