Jim Fletcher should have been playing for Woodfield in the South Staffs League . . . instead he won a Worthington’s Mid Shropshire League title.

He and Donnington Wood team-mate Paul Evans emerged from eight hours of action on the two greens at Maddocks on Saturday as proud winners of the Dixon Driscoll Doubles.

They swept aside last year’s winners John Price (Hadley USC) and Phil King (St Georges) 21-7 in a final played in the best sunshine of the day.

From six across, the Bell Boys took full advantage of a couple of ‘knock ins’ to power to victory on the back of some fine leads from Evans in just 16 ends.

Fletcher & Evans were 18-14 down to Jamie King (St Georges) & Aiden Smith (Donnington Wood) in their semi-final before getting onto their three-quarter corner mark over the centre of the crown to win to run out.

Meanwhile, Price & King powered from 7-4 behind to 19-10 ahead in beating Wrockwardine Wood brothers-in-law Allan Gaut & Phil Clee to 14.

Quarter-final scores: Fletcher & Evans 21, Rob Burroughs (St Georges) & Ian Pessall (Allscott) 13; J King & Smith 21 Peter Gaut & Joan Edwards (St Georges) 12; Price & P King 21, Darren Rhodes & Dave Churm (Sir John Bayley) 17; Gaut & Phil Clee 21, Alan Jones & John Higgs (Broseley) 14.
