Cricket: Shropshire lose grip on MCCA Trophy

Shropshire’s dejected cricketers have relinquished their grip on the MCCA Trophy, writes JAMES GARRISON.

Ed Foster’s side – who won the Minor Counties 50 overs per side competition last year – suffered an 11-run defeat at the hands of Cambridgeshire at Wellington yesterday.

On a day when the top four batsmen contributed only 23 runs, Shropshire fell agonisingly short of their pursuit of 227.

And that was a massive setback for captain Foster and his team who had their sights set on retaining the Trophy and playing in a Lord’s final after last year’s success at Durham.

“It’s a massive disappointment because I came into the weekend really confident we would win,” said Foster.

“The top order went cheaply and we still got very close so if only one of the first few batsmen had got even 20 or 30, we would have got over the line.

“We have played some fantastic cricket in this competition this season but the harsh realities of knockout cricket are that if you don’t perform for part of the game, you can find yourself in trouble and that’s what happened.”

Shropshire must now lift themselves for the final five games of the Championship season which continues when they face Herefordshire at Bridgnorth next Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
