Tennis hero Greg Rusedski served up a treat for Shropshire residents today by opening the £2.2 million Telford Tennis Centre.
The former British number one unveiled a commemorative plaque at 11am. He then met visitors and played games with children.
Funding for the eight courts, tennis shop and coaching facilities at Oakengates Leisure Centre was provided by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), Sport England and Telford & Wrekin Council.
The opening comes days ahead of the start of Wimbledon.
Mr Rusedski said he believes Andy Murray needs to be “aggressive” if he is to claim his first major title in the tournament.
Stuart Davidson, Telford & Wrekin Council’s leisure services delivery manager, said: “Tennis is never more in the public eye in this country than when the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships are taking place and so we feel it is perfect timing to have our official opening when they are starting.
“The new centre aims to make tennis more accessible for all ages and abilities and it was great to show it to a great player like Mr Rusedski.”
Bosses at the centre said all players booking courts between now and the end of August will be entered into a prize draw to win a racquet signed by Mr Rusedski.
The former US Open finalist also visited High Ercall Tennis Club at 2pm to open more new courts in the borough.
