Ludlow boxing club to be demolished and replaced
Monday 6th June 2011, 2:26PM BST.
A “run-down” boxing club building in south Shropshire will be demolished and replaced with £37,000 premises. Ludlow Amateur Boxing Club has used the Scout Hall in Livesey Road since reforming in 2007.
But now it hopes to move into the new building, which it will lease from the town council, by the end of July.
Club secretary Duncan Morris said: “The plan now is to grow the club and split the junior and adult training sessions so we can offer a higher class of coaching.
“We have about 60 active members aged between 10 and 33 so this is great news not just for the club, but for the area as well as it gives people a positive thing to do in their spare time.”
He added: “We hope the new place will bring more members, especially women, and we may start a new boxercise class too if there’s enough interest.”
Money has come from Shropshire Council, Ludlow Town Council and private donations.
Town clerk Veronica Calderbank said: “This is great news for the town as there are so many youngsters involved with the club.
“Under the guidance of Constable Tony Sewell and others, they are learning about fitness, health and discipline.”
Ms Calderbank said the old premises have been condemned due to major problems with the roof.
The club has urged anyone with joinery or bricklaying skills to donate a few hours towards the building work next month. To volunteer, call Mr Morris on (01584) 711532.
