Newport cricket ace Woodcock injures his Achilles tendon
Wednesday 1st June 2011, 8:01PM BST.
Newport top order batsmen Chris Woodcock will be missing for several weeks – and possibly months –after injuring his Achilles tendon in the Marston’s Shropshire Premier League clash with Albrighton.
Woodcock, who returned to the club at the beginning of the season, turned quickly while batting and collapsed in agony during Monday’s encounter.
He had to be “stretchered” from the middle on a spectators’ bench and was later transferred to hospital by ambulance.
“This is obviously a big blow to the club as whole but more particularly to Chris,” said chairman Bob Williams.
“We are all keeping our fingers crossed that he makes a full and speedy recovery. He was just beginning to hit top form.”
The rain affected game with Albrighton saw Newport gain a winning draw in a 26 over match after posting 147-9 and restricting the visitors to 111-7.
Nick Watkins, who had been planning to keep wicket, handed over the gloves to James Coggins and finished with 6-36 from his eight overs.
On Saturday, Newport enjoyed a 83 run victory over Allscott with Indian pro Parvez scoring 44 and taking 4-27 as the strugglers were dismissed for 145.
There were contrasting league weekends for Quatt and Worfield. Centuries for Adrian Evans (115no) and Ben Hitchock (106) helped Quatt to 286-1 declared and a 185 run victory over poor Broseley.
At the same time, Worfield were going down to a 59 run defeat at Wem.
But the roles were certainly reversed on Monday as Worfield were seven wicket victors in a weather affected game with their near rivals.
Worfield took advantage of winning an important toss to restrict Quatt to 129-9 in 31 overs, Dave Street top scoring with 39.
Struggling at 14-2, Worfield were grateful for a 112-run stand for the third wicket between Matt Turner (61) and Manny Singh (48no) to see them home by seven wickets.
