Shropshire cricketers all set to take on Worcestershire

Shropshire today unveiled the squad they hope will cause a major cricket upset when they face First Class opposition for the first time in six years on Thursday, writes JAMES GARRISON.

Ed Foster’s side face Worcestershire in a special Twenty20 challenge match at Wellington.

And the reigning one-day Minor Counties champions will field a strong-team with only Shrewsbury allrounder Joe Leach, who has university cricket commitments, unavailable.

Young Bridgnorth ace Jack Edwards is also omitted from the team which beat Northumberland in the MCCA Trophy last time out, with Shrewsbury’s Alex Blofield – who has a summer contract with Worcestershire – Wellington’s Mark Downes and Shifnal Jonty Mountford called up.

“It’s a great game for the Shropshire players and the cricketing public to look forward to,” said captain Foster.

“It’s been a long time since we have had a First Class team playing in Shropshire and you don’t know when it will happen again so we are hoping people will turn out in force.”

Thursday’s game begins at 3pm with admission £5.

Shropshire: Ed Foster (Shrewsbury, captain), Jono Whitney (Bridgnorth), Rob Foster, TomCox, Alex Blofield, DanBowen (all Shrewsbury), James Ralph (Kidderminster), Anthony Parker, Jonty Mountford (both Shifnal), Andy Gray (Alvaston & Boulton), Mark Downes (Wellington), Chris Murtagh (Reigate).
