Former world heavyweight boxing champion Frank Bruno proved to be a big hit as the guest of honour at a Shropshire boxing club’s first charity showcase event for more than a decade.

Telford Amateur Boxing Club held the event in a marquee at Telford’s Bucks Head stadium last night featuring 13 fights and a guest spot from Bruno.

Club coach Andy Hedges said: “It was fantastic, an amazing night for everyone.

“Frank Bruno was absolutely brilliant, he was chatting to everybody. He didn’t stop talking.

“It was great for the boxers, too, because all he did was praise the lads and give them encouragement.

“He was signing gloves and gave us copies of his autobiography which we sold on the night.

“All the money raised was split between the club and the Severn Hospice. We aimed to raise about £2,000 and I think we surpassed that easily.”

About 300 boxing fans packed into the marquee and enjoyed a hog roast provided by Shropshire Hogroast, as well as the chance to have their pictures taken with Bruno.

Mr Hedges added: “We had six of our boxers fighting and had two wins. Jamie Humphries and Colby Robson both had unanimous wins. We’ll definitely be putting on an event like this again.”

The club has been in existence since 1972.
