One of Shropshire cricket’s ‘hot potato’ issues will be on the agenda at a specially-called meeting tonight.

Representatives from the 14 Marston’s Shropshire Premier League clubs will gather at Reman Services in Shrewsbury (7.30pm) to discuss the possibility of a merger with the FBC Manby Bowdler League.

The meeting has been called by the Shropshire Cricket Board.

“We will have a vote on whether the merger should take place – and if that is agreed then we will look to see when it will happen,” said Board chairman Bob Williams.

“I think the general view is that it would be brought in for the start of next season.

“We have been in touch with the England Cricket Board and they don’t think it would affect any clubs if we did that because we’re doing it so early.

“The theory is that the Marston’s League would then be the Premier League of the FBC Manby Bowdler League under whatever title it is given.

“If it is agreed, then the hard work starts.”

FBC Manby Bowdler League officials have led calls for a merger between Shropshire’s two biggest leagues when they were angered by Marston’s League attempts to invite applications from clubs as they attempted to form a second division.

That was an attempt to trim the top flight from its current 14 clubs.
