Jono Whitney helps deliver Bridgnorth cricketers victory

A brilliant final over from Jono Whitney turned a draw into a dramatic Birmingham League division two victory for Bridgnorth over Aston Manor.

The game appeared destined for a draw as, in pursuit of Bridgnorth’s massive 308-6, the hosts reached 246-7 with two overs remaining.

But Whitney, who had earlier bowled 12 overs without success, produced a magical over to claim the last three wickets and wrap up his side’s first victory of the season.

Paceman Tom Weaver also claimed three scalps, for 48 runs, as he bowled 17 consecutive overs at the start of the innings.

“Tom bowled really well but we didn’t really support him at the other end until that excellent over from Jono,” said spokesman Ray Perry.

Earlier in the day, seven of Bridgnorth’s eight batsman got over 25 in contributing to their huge total — Whitney leading the way with 62 while overseas player Chris McMillan was unbeaten on 52.

Whitchurch won their second game on the bounce as they beat Fordhouses by five wickets.

Batting first, hosts Fordhouses were dismissed for just 128, largely thanks to Aqsad Ali who picked up 4-28 to go with the five he took last week.

In reply Whitchurch were always in control and positive knocks from Simon Gregory (37), Richie Oliver (30) and captain Hasnain (27) were enough to get the Heath Road side past the finishing post.

And Hasnain was impressed with the team’s display.

“We’ve started the season off really well,” he said.

“Having bought in a number of players you just hope that they all gel together and luckily enough that has happened.”

St Georges tossed away a golden chance to record their first Birmingham League division three victory of the season.

The Dragons looked destined for division glory as they skittled hosts Lichfield for just 102, Chris Greensall taking 4-14.

But they mis-fired badly with the bat as they were themselves dismissed for just 72.

Oswestry came within one wicket of a victory at Coleshill — despite their hosts being only seven down.

An unbeaten 80 from Dean Suter and maiden first team half century for 14-year-old Joe Clarke helped Oswestry to 254-5.

Warrick Fynn’s 3-39 gave Oswestry hope of forcing a win, particularly as two Coleshill batsmen were unable to bat through injury.

But the final pair survived the last over for the hosts as Coleshill finished on 162-7.
