Joe Hart’s ex-coach tells of player’s determination
Saturday 14th May 2011, 1:42PM BST.
Joe Hart has never been afraid to tough it out in a bid to reach the top, according to his former goalkeeping coach at Shrewsbury Town.
Former Meole Brace pupil Hart is enjoying a remarkable campaign and was facing Stoke in the FA Cup final today at Wembley.
Not only has Hart established himself as Manchester City’s first choice after returning on loan from Birmingham he is also England’s No 1.
Dave Timmins has looked on with pride after working with the player from an early age. “Joe came to Shrewsbury when he was eight,” he said. “I used to coach the County schools teams in Shropshire. He would come there to train and attend the club’s centre of excellence.
“The weather could be a nightmare, cold and wet. I had 12 keepers, including Joe, and not one of them moaned. When he got to 14 we tied him down at Shrewsbury.”
Hart made his Shrewsbury Town first-team debut in the 2003/04 season and was signed by the then City manager Stuart Pearce in May 2006.
Timmins, now Tranmere’s goalkeeping coach, added: “Joe is brave, that’s his strong point. He has made mistakes but he picked it up straight away and always works hard.
“The move to Manchester City has been fantastic for him.”
