David Goodfield wins under-18s England hockey call
Friday 8th April 2011, 11:00AM BST.
Shropshire hockey ace David Goodfield has been named in the England under-18s squad for the prestigious Four Nations youth tournament.
The 17-year-old rising star from Telford will be hoping to play a part in securing an English victory against Holland, Germany and Spain at Lilleshall over Easter.
And that could cap a fine April for Goodfield, who was today heading to Kent with his Telford & Wrekin under-18s team-mates gunning for glory in the England Hockey Under-18 Cup this weekend.
“He’s worked really, really hard so to get selected to play in this tournament is tremendous for him,” said his father Gwynn, who is also team manager of the Telford & Wrekin side.
“The fact that it is being played at Lilleshall is a big bonus and we are looking forward to it.
“The big tournament this year is the European under-18s in Utrecht in July and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that he will be selected for that one.”
Goodfield has previously represented England at under-16s level but missed out last year.
He could make his international return next weekend, with the under-18s side playing two friendlies against Scotland before the Four Nations tournament gets underway.
