Premier League football players Joe Hart and Dave Edwards made a special return to their home county as guests at an 11-a-side tournament which was held in Shropshire.

Manchester City and England goalkeeper Hart and Wolves and Wales midfielder Edwards went to the final of a three-day competition at Shrewsbury School yesterday.

The pair were both born and brought up in the Shrewsbury area and played for their home town club before progressing to become top flight players.

The tournament had involved Hart’s former school Meole Brace while Madeley Academy was among the eight sides in action over the three days.

The under-13 contest, which also saw schools competing from as far afield as Plymouth and Manchester, started on Monday.

The overall winners were Ivy Bridge Community College from Devon who received a cup from Hart and Edwards.

The 125 boys who took part in the competition also received a medal each from the Premier League stars.

Nikki Bevan, marketing co-ordinator for Shrewsbury School in Kingsland, said the tournament was organised by HS Sportsworld Ltd, run by Hart’s father Charles, of Bicton Heath.

She said: “It was a massive privilege to have Joe and Dave here. They were very popular with all the teams and all the boys who got lots of autographs.”

She added it was the first time the tournament had taken place in Shrewsbury.

“It’s been a great success so we hope they will come back for many years to come.”

The event also saw Hart reunited with his former teacher at Meole Brace School, Jamie Norman.
