Goole 1 Market Drayton 3

Two extraordinary results on an outlandish day in the Evo-Stick League South will send Drayton to table-topping Barwell tomorrow night in high spirits.

For while Town were demolishing Goole on Saturday, the long-time league leaders were losing their unbeaten home record by a surprise 4-0 margin to Lincoln United.

And that, says Drayton boss Simon Line, could bring a rare chance of success for Town on what would normally be by far their toughest away trip of the season.

“We are doing really well away from home and if we can hit them quickly, while they’re down after that result, we must be in with a good chance,” he adds.

Saturday’s strange string of results supports his belief.

Only two of the 11 home teams, Glapwell and Brigg Town, won their games – and Goole would confirm it too.

After all, that’s exactly what happened to them. They were scuppered as Drayton tore into a two goal lead within the half hour.

Just five minutes had gone when Duncan Swann-Horler worked his way through a still sleepy opposition to fire home from a sharp angle.

It was two in the 29th minute as young Jason Oswell did virtually the same, underlining his continued improvement, capping his bold run with a cool finish.

There might have been more as Drayton dominated the remaining time before the break but a combination of desperate defence and unlucky finishing left Goole in touch and all fired up for the second half.

But just as it seemed their rally might pay off, Dorryll Proffitt took a hand, effectively settling the game, just as he had in Tuesday’s 2-0 Shropshire Challenge Cup win over Hanwood United.

On that occasion it was a superb free kick – on this it was a wonderful 56th minute run.

Weaving past four Goole tackles he slid in a cross which Martyn Davies simply tapped home from a few yards.

Goole, who saved a game against Newcastle by scoring three in the last five minutes, huffed, puffed put themselves about and pulled one back on 75 minutes through Vill Powell.

But Drayton’s defence and midfield, who worked hard and well throughout, made sure that was their only consolation.
