Shropshire’s Adrian Gunnell today began his annual pursuit for snooker’s Holy Grail – a place at the Crucible for the World Championships.

Telford-based Gunnell has never qualified for the sport’s biggest tournament and must win three matches this week at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield to manage it in 2011.

He was today taking on China’s Liu Song in a best of 19 frame encounter. Gunnell has been badly struggling for form in recent months and was whitewashed by Song 5-0 in China Open qualifying less than two weeks ago.
