Bilal Shafayat signs on for duty

Wellington Cricket Club have pulled off a major coup by luring former Nottinghamshire batsman Bilal Shafayat to Orleton Park.
The 26-year-old has signed as the Birmingham League premier division outfit’s professional for the 2011 campaign.
That forms part of a double swoop for one of Shropshire’s leading clubs who have also swooped for 19-year-old South African Simon Khomari as their overseas player.
But it is the signing of Shafayt – who has averaged 30 from 120 First Class appearances and scored nine centuries – which will catch the eye.
The former England under 19 captain has had two spells at Nottinghamshire, the second of which ended last summer when he was released.
Sandwiched in between those stints at Trent Bridge came a spell at Northamptonshire where he was a team-mate of former Wellington professional Chris Rogers.
“We are really pleased with the signing and Bilal will bat in the top three for us,” said Wellington captain Anthony O’Connor.
“Bilal knows all about the Birmingham League and is looking forward to the challenge.
“He is versatile as well – he bowls medium pace and can keep wicket.
“We know there is a chance at some stage during the season that he could attract interest from a First Class county but if that’s the case, it’s because he will be doing well for us.”
Shafayat was 12th man for England during the 2009 Ashes Test at Cardiff.
Meanwhile, batting all-rounder Khomari – who offers a spin option – was part of the South African squad for last year’s under 19 World Cup.
