Becky Brisbourne rides first winner at Wolverhampton races
Tuesday 1st February 2011, 7:30PM GMT.
Teenager Becky Brisbourne gave her father, Shropshire trainer Mark, a magical moment at Wolverhampton as she rode her first winner under rules.
Becky, at 16 having only her fourth ride in public, produced 6-1 chance Downhill Skier with a perfectly timed run to beat favourite Young Simon by two and quarter lengths in the six furlong amateur riders handicap yesterday.
And Mark said: “That was one of the sweetest wins of my career – if not the sweetest. Considering this was only her fourth ride and the pace they were going, she has given the horse a tremendous ride and I am thrilled for her and the owner.”
And it now looks as though Becky will get more opportunities later in this month.
Brisbourne said: “There are a few amateur races coming up in February and Becky has certainly put herself in line for those, as well as other races in the months ahead.
“And she rode another good race on Kheley in the other amateur race but he is better over five furlongs than six.
“All I told her on Downhill Skier was to keep him in the race because he gets seven furlongs and would not be stopping.”
Brisbourne has his team in cracking form at the moment and Downhill Skier’s win made it six wins during January.
He added: “In December, we had 24 runners and we had 20 in the first four, including seven winners.”
Now he is gearing up for the start of the turf season and he said: “For this calendar year, I am hoping to have 35 to 40 horses with 10 of them race fit for the all-weather.
“The horses for the turf are just starting and we have eight two-year-olds. That’s a little better than last year and hopefully a bit more quality.”
