Richie Woodhall hopes boxing club will find a star

Former world champion boxer Richie Woodhall claims a new Telford club he is fronting will discover a future star of the sport.

Olympic bronze and Commonwealth gold medal winner Mr Woodhall, who will take on the role of coach and chairman of the proposed Wellington Amateur Boxing Club, believes the centre will discover a future champion.

“There will be some who will come from the town who will go on and win major honours,” said Mr Woodhall, speaking after the club was recommended for approval by planners.

“With the right environment and training they can go all the way, represent their country, and then who knows.”

The proposal for the club goes before Telford & Wrekin Council plans board on Wednesday, but Mr Woodhall is confident the community run club will be granted approval.

He said: “It’s great news all round, I’ve never considered that it wouldn’t go through, it’s not entered my mind.

“If it’s going to reduce crime and get the kids off the street how can it not be passed? That’s my view.”
