Stamford 1 Market Drayton Town 3

The long trip to Lincolnshire proved worthwhile for Market Drayton Town as they eased their Evo Stik League division one south relegation worries with a fine triumph.

A Nicky Porter brace and goal from Tom Rogers was enough for Simon Line’s side to notch their fifth league victory of the campaign at Stamford.

It capped a fine three days for Drayton who learned at the end of last week they were to be invited back into the Shropshire Senior Cup from next season.

And Line was delighted with the efforts of his side on Saturday.

“It was a good day for us and an important victory,” said the Drayton boss.

“We played very well for the first 35 minutes and should really have put the game to bed.

“Stamford had a good spell either side of half-time and they got a goal back after we had gone 2-0 up.

“But after that, they didn’t really give us too much to worry about.”

Drayton got off to a flying start with Porter giving the visitors an eighth minute lead when he slotted home after being sent clear by Tom Rogers.

The visitors spurned further chances to extend their lead in the opening period, but doubled the advantage just after the hour when Porter repaid the favour to Rogers by providing the assist for the striker to produce a neat finish.

Paul Malone pulled one back for Stamford on 68 minutes but an injury time effort from Porter, after good work from Dorryl Proffitt sealed the victory.

Of the four clubs below Drayton, Leek and Rainworth Miners Welfare were both victorious but there were defeats for the bottom two, Spalding and Shepshed.

“We play Leek and Shepshed in the next two league games so they will be really important for us,” added Line.

Before that, Drayton are in Shropshire Challenge Cup action when they entertain Whitchurch Alport in Saturday’s quarter-final.
